Virtues Of The Day Of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah)

Virtues Of The Day Of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah)
Assalaamu Alaikum,

We are coming up to one of the most important days in the Islamic calendar. The 9th of Dhul Hijjah (Monday 15th November) will be the day of Arafah, it is on this day that the pilgrims gather at the mountain top of mount Arafah, praying and supplicating to their Lord. It is mustahabb (highly recommended) for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day, since the Prophet (saw) was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah, and he said:

“It expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.” Likewise the Prophet (saw) said “There is no day on which Allah frees people from the fire more so than on the day of Arafah. He comes close to those (people standing on Arafah) and then He revels before His Angels saying, ‘What are these people seeking.’ (Sahih Muslim)

The pilgrims are engaged in the remembrance of Allah, spending the day in worship and making duaa to Allah. For this reason, fasting is not for them.
As well as this being a day when the pilgrims stand in remembrance of Allah on the mountain, it was also on this day that Allah perfected our deen for us:

“A Jewish man said to Umar bin Al-Khattab, `O Leader of the Believers! There is a verse in your Book, which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed) as a day of celebration.' Umar bin Al-Khattab asked,`Which is that verse' The Jew replied, "This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." (Surah Maidah Ayah:3) Umar (ra) replied,’By Allah! I know when and where this verse was revealed to Allah's Messenger . It was the evening on the Day of Arafah on a Friday.'' (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

The crowds on this day should remind you of the Day of Resurrection. Humble yourself to Allah, praise Him Alone through your worship, sincere intention and strong determination to free yourself from the sins of the past and to build up a commitment to rush for doing what is good. Think of becoming a better person. Rid yourself of false pride and showing off because it may ruin what you gain on this day. May Allah accept all our fasts on this day answer our duaas, and accept the Hajj of all the Pilgrims. Ameen.
