The Story Of Ka'ab Ibn Maalik ( Radi Allaahu 'Anhu):

The Muslims had conquered Makkah, and news of this conquest had spread to Ceaser, of Rome who decided to extinguish the Prophet salallaho 'alayhi wa sallam and his followers, thus extinguishing his threat. As the Prophet salallaho 'alayhi wa sallam readied for war, excuses were made by the hypocrites to be excused, thus the Prophet salallaho 'alayhi wa sallam excused them. This is the story of Ka'ab Ibn Maalik and others who were distracted from war by their material possessions, but who were sincere and did not make excuses like the hypocrites when the prophet returned. This tells of the trial, Allah swt placed them through, and then the reward they were granted for their patience, mentioning their deed as revelation in the Qur'aan.
The brother also goes on to talk about the evils of lying even whilst joking and the evils of backbiting etc.
