The Europeans were backward and lived in dark ages from 8th to the 12 th centuries because they were living under the authority of the church which burned many scientists alive such as Giordano Bruno who said that earth rotates around the sun because this contradicts the bible . they are getting advance nowadays in science because they they are getting away from their religion whereas The Arabs and the Muslims, were very much advanced at that time ,but they are getting away from science because they are going away from their religion and they abandoned the Quran and followed their desires .
