Allaah has commanded us to be sincere when making du'a, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

"So, call you (O Muhammad and the believers) upon (or invoke) Allaah making (your) worship pure for Him (Alone) (by worshipping none but Him and by doing religious deeds sincerely for Allaah's sake only and not to show off and not to set up rivals with Him in worship)" [Ghaafir 40:14].

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Remember Allah during times of ease and He will remember you during times of hardship." Narrated by Ahmad.

Other aspects of the etiquette of making du'aa', although they are not waajib (obligatory), are: to face the Qiblah; to make du'aa in a state of tahaarah (purity); to start the du'a with praise of Allah and blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). It is also prescribed to raise the hands when making du'a.

A man once visited the Prophet's mosque in Madinah. There he saw a group of people sitting and discussing their faith together. Among them were Salman (who came from Persia), Suhayb who grew up in the Eastern Roman empire and was regarded as a Greek, and Bilal who was an African. The man then said:

"If the (Madinan) tribes of Aws and Khazraj support Muhammad, they are his people (that is, Arabs like him). But what are these people doing here?"

The Prophet became very angry when this was reported to him. Straightaway, he went to the mosque and summoned people to a Salat. He then addressed them saying:

"O people, know that the Lord and Sustainer is One. Your ancestor is one, your faith is one. The Arabism of anyone of you is not from your mother or father. It is no more than a tongue (language). Whoever speaks Arabic is an Arab." (As quoted in Islam The Natural Way by Abdul Wahid Hamid p. 125)

The methodology of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah is that the Qur'an is the revealed speech of Allah, not created. From Him it began, and to Him it will return. He actually spoke with it, making Jibreel responsible for descending with it and revealing it upon the heart of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Both the Qur'an and Sunnah prove this belief.

From the proofs of the Qur'an is the statement of Allah (the Exalted): And if anyone of the Mushrikoon seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the speech of Allah. (Qur'an 9:6)

The "speech of Allah" here means the Qur'an. Another proof is His (Exalted is He) statement: A blessed Book which we have revealed to you that they might reflect on its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded. (Qur'an 38:29)

And His saying: The trustworthy spirit (Jibreel) has brought it down upon your heart, that you may be one of the warners - in a clear Arabic language. (Qur'an 26:193-195)

Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan - Obeying others besides Allah

Bismillah al-Rahman al-Raheem
In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the Most Merciful

In his book, "Guide to The Sound Creed", Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
One of the acts of polytheism is to obey scholars and rulers in permitting the unlawful or prohibiting the lawful. Allah, the Almighty, says: They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and (also) the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him. (Qur'an 9:31)

'Adi ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) has narrated: "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting: They have taken their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah... (Qur'an 9:31) So, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! We did not worship them.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Did they not prohibit what Allah made lawful , so you view it as prohibited, and they make lawful what Allah prohibited, so you view it as lawful?' I said: 'Yes.' Thereupon, he said: 'This is your worship of them.'"
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has explained that the concept of taking rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah is not confined to the literal meaning of bowing and prostrating before them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has demonstrated that the Jews and Christians have followed the steps of their rabbis and monks in altering Divine Legislations by permitting the unlawful and prohibiting the lawful. By doing so, such people have been regarded as ones surrendering themselves to rivals set for sharing Allah's duty of lawgiving. It is, in principle, an act of major polytheism. Almighty Allah has said: And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him, Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him. (Qur'an 9:31)
